SERVPRO of North Columbiana County is just as excited as you are about all the fun fall holidays, treats and activities. But as fall is at its peak---let’s review some fall safety fire tips to keep everyone safe throughout the holidays.

Time changes mean battery changes. Make it a point when the clocks change back to make sure you change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors as well. This should be an annual tradition, so you never forget to change out the detectors. Life can get so busy sometimes---we can forget if it is not attached to something else. Make this a habit.

No matter what you use to heat your home, making sure the heating device is in good working order is very important. With so many things that could go wrong with heating equipment during the summer and spring months when you are not using them---this needs to be a priority in the fall.

Get your central heating system cleaned and serviced by a certified HVAC contractor every year. Make sure you change your furnace filter before you turn on the system too. If you have a gas heater, make sure your carbon monoxide detector is working and functional. Those do have a shelf life. So make sure it’s in good, working order!

If you have a drafty home and you utilize space heaters---make sure to follow proper safety protocols. Make sure the space heater has room to breath with at least three feet of empty space, never place clothing or blankets near a space heater, do not place the unit near draperies or furniture, and never leave a space heater unattended or left on when you sleep.

If your home has a fireplace--- get your chimney inspected annually to make sure it stays clean and open. You can even hire a chimney sweep to clean it out every fall. Make sure to repair any cracks in the fireplace. Always use the fireplace as intended with the screen to ensure no sparks hit the carpet or flooring. And never use gasoline to start a fire in your home fireplace.

Lastly, this is a great time to go over what to do in the case of a fire at your home. Teach your children and family members where to go and how to respond, and what to expect in the case of fire. Practice stop, drop, and roll, and create a fire escape plan on paper.
