Who's Responsible When a Tree Falls on a Power Line?

Have you ever looked outside your window and thought… who is responsible for those tree limbs touching the power lines? Hmm. That seems like it could be dangerous.

Should a homeowner try to get involved with the cutting of trees? Or is this always completed by the power company?

Trees are the leading cause of power outages. In fact, when trees grow into the power lines this creates a very dangerous situation for everyone involved. The short answer is--- if a tree falls on a power line, then the electric utility company that owns the lines is generally responsible for repairing them and restoring power.

Being a resident of North Columbiana County---Ohio Edison would be the responsible party. Ohio Edison hires professional vegetation management companies to assist with clearing trees and vegetation away from electric power lines. To read more about your responsibilities as a homeowner. Click here.

The National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) requires utility companies to make sure trees, branches and other vegetation near power lines are trimmed, pruned and/or removed as necessary to prevent damage to the lines that could create a risk of electrocution or electric shock injury.

But---don’t think as a homeowner you are totally off the hook. The utility companies generally only take care of the trees that are growing in the pole-to-pole lines. Trimming trees around the utility’s power line that connects a person’s home to the utility pole is usually viewed as being the homeowner’s responsibility. It is also referred to as the “service drop.”
